Continuing Education and Competency Program - Learning Plan and Activities
The Continuing Education and Competency (CEC) Program is a mandatory annual requirement for all registrants of the College of Paramedicine of Prince Edward Island (CPPEI). The program is designed to support registrants in maintaining safe, competent, and ethical paramedic practice through self-assessment, planning, learning activities, and reflective practice.
Learning Plan and Supporting Documents
Registrants are required to develop a learning plan annually and to document their learning activities and reflections. You must retain your learning plan and all supporting documentation. If selected for audit, you will be required to submit these materials to the College.
Purpose of the Learning Plan
The learning plan is your opportunity to identify areas where you want or need to expand your knowledge or skills. It helps ensure that you continue to grow professionally within your practice environment. Your plan should include:
- Learning Goals – at least two per year
- Objectives – specific actions or activities you will take
- Timelines – when you will complete the goals
- Reflective Practice – how your learning has improved your practice or impacted client outcomes
Plans should reflect your personal and professional development needs and connect to CPPEI’s Standards of Practice and Code of Ethics.
Learning Activities and Credit Hours
All registrants must complete a minimum of 25 CEC credit hours annually (April 1 – March 31). If you are registered for part of the year, the credit requirement is prorated. Learning activities may be formal or informal, including:
- Workshops, courses, or conferences
- Staff meetings and case discussions
- Mentoring or preceptorship
- Committee or council participation
- Consultations with other care providers
- Unit-based or research projects
Refer to CPPEI’s Schedule of Activities and Credit Hours (available on our Resource page) to determine how activities qualify for CEC credit.
Note: Credit hours must be relevant to your professional practice. They cannot be carried over to the next year.
Developing Your Learning Plan (At Renewal)
It is recommended that you begin preparing your learning plan alongside your annual registration renewal:
- Self-Assessment (optional but encouraged): Use the CPPEI Self-Assessment Tool to evaluate your practice against the Standards of Practice and Code of Ethics.
- Identify Goals: Choose two realistic learning goals aligned with your practice.
- Set Objectives: Outline how you will achieve each goal.
- Track Activities: As you complete learning, record the date, time spent, a summary of the activity, and your reflections.
- Reflect: At the end of the year, assess what you learned and how it has influenced your practice and client outcomes.
Helpful Hints
- Maintain clear records of activities and summaries of what you learned.
- Regularly update your learning plan as you complete activities.
- Keep notes on how each activity has impacted your professional development—this will be essential for your annual reflection and potential audit.
